You know that nauseating feeling when you realize that your ‘new’ computer is already outdated? Today I feel that way about cooking. This new solar cooking device makes my traditional stovetop look and function like an antique. The solar powered GoSun Stove simplifies cooking technology to a romantic state of powerless efficiency. This space-age looking oven boasts a meal in 20 minutes, up to three pounds of food, and a max temperature of 550 °F (288 °C).
The GoSun Stove is the brainchild of solar engineer Patrick Sherwin. Patrick was experimenting with disassembled solar panel tubes when inspiration struck. Patrick explains, “Before long I had gone up to the refrigerator, pulled out some hot dogs, fired them inside the tube, and next thing you know I’ve got lunch.”
After two years of refining the “evacuated tube technology” the solar cooker vision is ready for mass production. The Applied Sunshine team recently launched The GoSun Stove on Kickstarter and have begun to accept preorders. In the first 24 hours the project reached nearly 50% of its $40,000 goal. This rapid funding exemplifies the public craving for accessible and refined solar technology.
The GoSun Stove sports a functional design that screams, “I’M FROM THE FUTURE!… and I can bake a damn good chicken.” There is irony in the pairing of the “natural cooking” idea with the future technology aesthetic. Like monkeys using iPods.
